January 9 – Insurance Moratorium Announced

As emergency evacuations continue across Los Angeles County, California Department of Insurance announced that Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara issued a one-year moratorium on homeowner insurance policy cancellations and non-renewals in impacted ZIP Codes. This statewide order ensures residents—regardless of whether their homes were damaged—retain coverage while recovering from the fires. The moratorium applies to properties within or adjacent to fire zones and protects homeowners from the added burden of losing insurance during a disaster.

In addition to the moratorium, Commissioner Lara is urging insurance companies to extend grace periods, stop pending non-renewals, and provide immediate support for evacuation and recovery costs covered under most homeowners’ and renters’ policies.
