March 27 – LADWP Sued Over Palisades Fire + Debris Removal Deadline

A group of Los Angeles and Malibu homeowners has filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), claiming the utility’s power lines caused the destructive Palisades Fire in January 2025. The suit alleges that a wooden LADWP power pole snapped hours after the fire began, sparking a second ignition that spread rapidly through neighborhoods. Victims say LADWP falsely told the public the line had been de-energized for years, but later admitted it was live at the time. The fire destroyed nearly 7,000 buildings and damaged 1,000 more, making it one of California’s most devastating wildfires.

The lawsuit also blames LADWP for not shutting off power lines after the fire started, which allegedly caused exploding transformers and new fires. In addition, plaintiffs say empty water reservoirs and weak hydrant pressure made it harder for firefighters to respond. Under California law, utilities can be held responsible for fire damage even without proof of negligence. If you or someone you know was affected by the Palisades Fire, you may be entitled to compensation for property loss, injuries, and other damages.
