July 23 - Edison Announces Compensation Program, Sparking Concerns Over Fair Payouts

Southern California Edison announced plans to launch a Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program this fall for Eaton Fire victims, but some attorneys are warning the offer may leave families with far less than they could recover through legal action. While the program promises faster payouts for losses like property damage, injuries, and wrongful death, Edison has not admitted fault for the fire. Critics say utility-run programs like this have historically shortchanged victims and could pressure people into settling before fully understanding the value of their claims. More details are expected in the coming weeks.

Kiley Grombacher, co-founder of California Fire Victims Law Center, released a statement that was featured in coverage from CalMatters, Los Angeles Times, Pasadena Now, Daily Journal, and Law.com: “While details have yet to be made public, Edison's Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program appears designed to minimize payouts to Eaton fire victims while protecting the utility from full accountability. Without admitting fault or providing transparency, Edison is asking victims to potentially waive their rights for what history shows will likely be pennies on the dollar. Fire victims deserve full and fair compensation, not a quick deal that leaves them shortchanged. We urge all affected residents to seek proper legal advice before engaging with any utility-run program that could compromise their family's future recovery.”
