July 30 - Governor Newsom Proposes $18 Billion Boost to Utility Wildfire Fund

A new report from Bloomberg News reveals that Governor Gavin Newsom is pushing legislation to add $18 billion to California’s Wildfire Fund — a move aimed at supporting utilities like PG&E, Edison, and Sempra as wildfire claims continue. The fund, created in 2019, was designed to speed up compensation for victims of utility-caused fires while shielding power companies from overwhelming financial liability. If approved, the new funding would again come from a mix of ratepayer fees and utility contributions. The proposal is still in draft form, but it signals continued efforts to protect utilities while victims often struggle with delays and underpaid claims.
